July 2011 Large Mouth Thumb, Crappie Hand

On July 15, our friends Ron and Kathy invited us to their lovely home in Galena or what was to become an amazing weekend of fishing!

We arrived at 7pm on Friday, and immediately went out on the pontoon. Pat and Kathy started the fishing weekend by catching the first sunfish. They were using purple mini-mite lures, no live bait. After a while, Ron and I began getting bites also. We stayed on the boat until after dark!

On Saturday, we hit the water around 10:00am, and we started by catching everything!
Each of us caught Perch, Large Mouth Bass, Sun fish and Crappies, and young Walleye.

After a stop back at the house we went out in the evening, this time taking my Ipad, with a cool app called StarWalk. When the stars came out, we could orient the Ipad to the sky, and see an image of the constellation we were pointed at! Very cool.

Our lure selection had to be the pink mini-mites. Nothing else seemed to work. When I put a sinker on my line to increase casting distance, no bites. When I removed the sinker, immediate bites! If I used a minnow, I got one bite. No minnows - lots of bites.

This was probably a once-in-a-lifetime fishing weekend!

April - May 2011

April 22 - 30, 2011

On April 22, Pat and I stayed for a week in Pam and Bob Blasius's condo in Fort Myers, Florida. It was Pat's spring break! I brought along my fishing tackle, and tried to do some fishing time each day.

Check out my blog of our Fort Myers Spring Break 2011

On April 26, Wednesday, we rented a Pontoon boat at Bonita Beach Rentals, for 4 hours. This is a first for me, as I had never driven a Pontoon boat without Ron McKay by my side!

I caught one catfish using shrimp for bait! Unfortunately the remainder of my bait spilled out of the bucket because I forgot to haul it in when I moved to a different location! Th Pelicans enjoyed my bait by plunging out of the sky after the shrimp!

Thanks to Mike Echterling, I'm now a member of the Lake County Fish and Game Protective Acssociation in Griffith Indiana. This is a membership based conservation association, with 17 acres of fishing ponds! May 4th was the monthly meeting, so I arrived early and met Conservation Mike and Pat Renwick of the WJOB Region Bass Buzz (1230 AM) show.

I fished three of the ponds with a lure supplied by Pat, and landed 3 Bass!
Thanks guys!

May 18, 2011 Wednesday
Pat had a school event, so I went to the Lake County Fish and Game Protective Acssociation ponds, in Griffith. Weather was cool, in the 50's, cloudy and misty. Got a strong nibble right away, and nothing again for the evening. I enjoyed walking around the ponds, in the quiet, sharing tthe water with a couple of duck families. Nice finish to a hectic Wednesday.

Spring 2011

Trying out some new equipment. I have a pair of lovingly used Abu Garcia Revo sx bait cast reels from my friend Pat. I purchased an Abu Garcia Vendetta 6'6" rod and mounted the black reel on it. I mounted the silver reel on my 2 piece travel rod.

First time on our Maynard lake, the vendetta rig bound up. Couldn't cast. The two piece that I loaded with 10 lb mono cast, but after a few casts the line broke causing a giant backlash mess. Slinking back to the car, I vowed to reload both reels. Definitely massive equipment / operator failure!

Sunday March 20th, I got back to the lake and bravely started using Vendetta, now loaded with 10 lb. Triline mono. Good smooth action, casting with a jig mister twister. I could throw it much further then I've been able to in the past. No fish in evidence, but it's still cold out.
